Once again this year, Lugano will be transformed into an enchanting Christmas town, offering a rich program of events, spectacular decorations, and some interesting new features.
From November 30, 2024, to January 7, 2025, locals and tourists alike can immerse themselves in a festive and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to numerous initiatives designed for young and old alike.
A city illuminated by the magic of Christmas
The streets of central Lugano will be illuminated by thousands of twinkling lights that will envelop Piazza Manzoni, Via Nassa, and Piazza Dante. The symbol of this year’s event will be the Storytelling Tree located in Parco Ciani: a large tree that will tell Christmas stories and fairy tales every evening from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., offering visitors a unique experience.

Main events and attractions
Christmas in Lugano 2024 will be full of unmissable attractions for all ages. Here are some of the highlights of the program:
- Christmas Market: from November 30, 2024, to January 7, 2025, over 60 wooden huts will be set up between Piazza Manzoni, Via Nassa, and Piazza Dante. Here you will find local handicrafts, handmade decorations, and Christmas food specialties. Unlike previous years, the market will remain open after Christmas until January 7.
- Ice skating rink: an ice rink will be set up in Parco Ciani and will be open from November 30, 2024, to January 7, 2025. Both experts and beginners can enjoy themselves in a dreamlike atmosphere, surrounded by Christmas music and the aroma of hot chocolate and mulled wine from the Food&Drink huts. Access to the rink will be free, with skates available to hire for CHF 5.
- Food chalets: for those who want to enjoy a unique gastronomic experience, Piazza della Riforma will host chalets dedicated to tasting typical winter dishes. The chalets will be open every day from November 28, 2024, to January 6, 2025, with extended hours until midnight on weekdays and until 1:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays.
- Family Village with “Le Fiabe dei Nonni” (Grandparents’ Fairy Tales): at the Asilo Ciani, a space dedicated to families will host the initiative “Le Fiabe dei Nonni,” where grandparents from the community will tell children stories that embody Christmas values. This initiative is a brand new addition to this edition and aims to create a moment of intergenerational sharing.
- New Year’s Eve: New Year’s Eve will also be celebrated in a special way. The traditional fireworks display will be replaced by a collective toast in collaboration with Rete Tre, ensuring a sustainable and unforgettable celebration.

Christmas in the Neighborhoods
An initiative involving different areas of the city is “Christmas in the Neighborhoods.” The goal is to bring the Christmas atmosphere outside the historic center with musical events, shows, creative workshops for children, and opportunities for socializing for all ages. This program extends to different parts of the city, enhancing the community dimension of Christmas.
Digital Advent Calendar
An original digital offering is the “Digital Advent Calendar.” Every day, from December 1 to 24, you can open a virtual “window” to reveal surprises, prizes, and exclusive content. This initiative is aimed primarily at young people and families, offering an innovative and interactive way to experience the anticipation of Christmas.
Musical Events and Shows
Lugano will also host Christmas concerts, theater shows, and artistic performances. The city’s churches and theaters will be the setting for traditional musical events, such as Christmas choirs and classical music concerts. In addition, entertainment shows for children and families will be organized in theaters and main squares.
